“DAMMIT JIM”
You can be a fan of problematic things while still enjoying them. There are a lot of shows I love, and still sit back and critcize for its problematic elements. I reblogged a post from someone I respect, who is very concerned with the problematic nature of media and people in general, criticizing the casting of Star Trek: Into Darkness. The critique was good, and it didn’t shame fans, and still, plenty of people are whining about how the particular character COULD be white. It’s not ambiguous. It’s an Indian name. Even if it WAS ambiguous, there are far too many “ambiguous” characters filled by white actors. And explicitly characters that are POC are cast as white (see ATLA movie and The Hunger Games franchise, for example).
No one is saying you can’t like problematic things. I’m going to see the movie in about an hour and a half and I am sooooo fucking excited. Honestly haven’t been this excited since Les Mis or The Hobbit. I still am disappointed with the casting, though I know Benedict will do a fantastic job.

“not tempted to go as that legendary green bellydancer, then?”
because when a woman dresses up as a character from a sci-fi show it should really be a sexualized one ugh ugh ugh

It’s not about the actor… it’s about what the actor represents, which is the fact that at some point, the creators of this film decided that there was no brown person good enough to play a character which is a brown person.
And that’s f—- bullshit. That’s insulting to every non-white actor working on the planet, and it’s insulting to every non-white person in the potential audience. That’s it. That’s all it’s about.

Not that eugenics hasn’t been a coded discussion for white supremacy anyway, but still.
