Is this cultural appropriation?
I have a pair of characters, one is a white girl with big fluffy purple hair, and red markings all over her skin, the other is a dark skinned islander character, with white hair and blue markings.
I was just wondering, since both live on an island, in a sort of ancient civilisation sort of deal, but the islander girl is more ‘tribal’ i guess? She hunts and wears feathers in her hair - but she’s not like a savage compared to the other girl, not at all.
Idk if it’s like cultural appropriation or racism or anything - I don’t really ahve any experience with that stuff and it’s very hard to find someone who actually knows anything legitimate about it.
Trying to incorporate more diversity into my character lineup, but do it in a good way.
I’m going to try to say this gently, because it’s very apparent that you are WAY at the beginning of your learning journey:
If you’re using words like ‘tribal’ and ‘savage’ and think that paint + feathers in hair + hunting = these things, you are probably not ready to be incorporating more diversity into your character lineup.
And if you can’t find extensive writings about cultural appropriation on tumblr, you’re not trying. Look through the archives of the cultural appropriation tag, then swing by the TV tropes indexes about unfortunate implications and race tropes.
