memo to white liberals: body odor is not revolutionary

ickyharry:

Memo to a variety of people who seem to need reminding:

allergies are a real thing

scent-sensitivity is a real thing and can be the result of any number of disabilities or illnesses

and believe it or not, some people don’t like showers, for a variety of reasons

So some of us will not just “buy some soap, take some showers, try some essential oils”.

Some of us may have meltdowns if we try to do such things.

It might make some of us sick.

Some of us might just not want to.

Please don’t forget that we exist, and that if everyone goes about wafting scents at us, we cannot go out in public or participate in society.

It’s entirely possible to keep clean and hygenic with unscented products.

If you’re able to keep clean and hygenic without taking showers, awesome. But if that’s the case, the above post is not directed at you.

If you have an offensive odor, you are just as disruptive in terms of ‘wafting scent’ as obnoxious folks who bathe in alcohol-based synthetic perfumes - and if you don’t wash regularly, you are very likely harboring potentially harmful bacteria.

No one is telling you that you must utilize any of the above suggestions. We’re saying that if you smell like stale sweat, bacteria waste, and rancid human body oils, we are going to avoid you.
